In 2008, the Ministry of Education launched a project to establish General Education TW (hereinafter referred to as “GET”) as a platform to integrate resources for liberal education around Taiwan. GET also plays the role of hub so that the philosophy and practice of liberal education at every college in Taiwan can be communicated widely in the hope that not only academics but the public can acquire a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of liberal education. Since 2013, GET is run by National Taiwan University. Presently there are more than 170 liberal education courses around Taiwan available on GET in the form of OpenCourseWare. GET also contains several databases of learning materials for which arrangement with the copyright holder has been negotiated so they can be used by anyone. By virtue of these abundant high-quality materials, GET is devoted to establishing roots in liberal education with distinguishing features pertaining to Taiwan, and as the paragon of liberal education throughout Chinese society.
The Chinese Association for General Education was established on April, 1994, with the aim of studying the concept and practice of liberal education as well as development strategies for its implementation. The Association launched the double-blind peer reviewed biannual periodical – Taiwan Journal of General Education – as an academic platform for circulating research and current trends regarding liberal education around the globe. This periodical is the only one of its kind in Taiwan evaluated by Ministry of Science & Technology. The Association also regularly hosts workshops and academic symposiums each year.
As liberal education in Taiwan continues evolving from a popularization phase to a cultivation and promotion phase, there is still no consensus concerning the connotations and implementation of liberal education. As such, The Chinese Association for General Education launched General Education Online in October, 2005, as the first magazine about liberal education with a focus on Chinese society. Each article of every issue over the years can be viewed online at the magazine’s website. The targeted readership of this magazine includes, but is not limited to, collegiate and high school instructors and students. The mission of the magazine is to provide a forum for “in-depth reporting”, “concept discussion” and “exchange of views” on liberal education.
To enhance academic competency, students need to think critically, master communication skills, and acquire discipline-specific knowledge that demonstrates scholarship. The Academic Writing Education Center (AWEC), founded in 2008, aims to strengthen students’ academic competency in writing and speaking through rigorous training. To achieve this goal, AWEC offers credit-bearing related courses, and provides talks, workshops and consultation services to answer NTU students’ and faculty’s academic needs in the development of their communicative abilities.
