NTU Raymond Soong Chair Professorship of Distinguished Research

Prof. Sir Andre Geim, a Nobel Laureate in Physics 2010

The NTU Raymond Soong Chair Professorship of Distinguished Research was established through the generous endowment of Mr. Raymond Soong, founder of Lite-On Group, in 2023.

Beginning in 2025, it will be jointly promoted with the TAIWAN BRIDGES Program, co-organized by National Taiwan University (NTU) and Academia Sinica, in collaboration with twelve leading academic and research institutions across Taiwan and the International Peace Foundation (IPF).

From 2025 to 2026, the program will host a series of lectures and dialogues featuring 31 Nobel Laureates, building bridges between world-class academic research and meaningful societal exchange. The inaugural lecture and opening ceremony will feature Prof. Sir Andre Geim, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2010), as the distinguished speaker. All members of the NTU community are warmly invited to attend.

l   Introduction of Speaker:

Sir Andre Geim is a distinguished physicist with a lot of curiosity and creativity, who has led to several exciting discoveries in modern physics. He is best known as one of the discoverers of graphene, a remarkable material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms with extraordinary mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. This breakthrough earned him the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, which he shared with his colleague Konstantin Novoselov. Sir Andre is also well known for his playful approach to science -- making a frog levitate with a strong magnetic field, an experiment that won him an Ig Nobel Prize! Today, through his work at the University of Manchester, he continues to push the boundaries of science and inspire new generations of researchers.
