• Application Procedure: Upon receiving approval from the curriculum committees of the instructor's home department (or institute/academic program) and the college, please submit the following application documents to the Center for General Education. All the materials are available on the Center's website.

• Important Notices for Proposing a New General Education Course：

  • Once approved by the Center's Curriculum Committee, General Education courses that meet the following criteria are given priority when applying for subsidies under the Project for the Improvement of General Education, which covers expenses for teaching assistant allocations, guest speaker honorariums, and field trips:
    1. ​​​​​Courses that bridge two distinct General Education areas.
    2. Courses that focus on media literacy or information interpretation.
    3. Courses that incorporate hands-on experience, practical work, action research, or case studies.
    4. Courses that focus on digital literacy, addressing topics such as AI, internet safety, statistics, information interpretation, programming languages, big data, or data science.
    5. EMI General Education Courses
       • To encourage instructors to offer English-Medium Instruction (EMI) General Education courses, the Office of International Affairs provides specialized subsidies for EMI courses taught by full-time faculty.   • Notes：
    • To explore the eight main areas of the General Education curriculum and their respective objectives, please refer to the Center's website, The General Education Curriculum page.
    • If the proposing instructor is a part-time faculty member, a personal resume or a relevant professional portfolio should also be enclosed for the committee's reference.
    • If a Liberal Education course has not been offered for three or more years, it shall be deemed a new course, and a reapplication must be submitted for review.
    • If an established course undergoes any modifications to its curriculum number, course title, instructor, credit hours, or area of study, it shall be deemed a new course, and a reapplication shall be submitted for review.
    • A new General Education course proposal must first be reviewed and approved by the respective college’s curriculum committee before being forwarded to the Center. To ensure that all proposals reach the Center by the deadline, each college may establish its own internal processing deadlines and announce them to its departments (or institutes/academic programs). Once approved by the college, the proposal, along with the department's reviewed List of New General Education Courses, should be forwarded to the Center's Curriculum Committee for final review.     • When submitting a new General Education course proposal, instructors may simultaneously apply for subsidies under the Project for the Improvement of General Education. Please wait for the Center to announce the latest application procedures and timelines.

The General Education Center's Course Committee of NTU has thus established the following reference indicators for the review of general education courses：

Formal Review Indicators

1. For those with full-time positions at NTU, a three-level, three-stage review system for new courses is implemented, which means that courses must first be approved by the department's curriculum committee, then sent to the General Education Center; the General Education Center will have the general education area convener conduct a preliminary review, and finally, it will be sent to the General.
2. The course syllabus should be comprehensively written.
3. A list of academic publications or works related to the course from the past five years should be submitted.
4. Courses taught in Chinese should provide a Chinese syllabus, and those taught in English should provide an English syllabus.
5. For part-time teachers, a personal resume should be attached.

Substantive Review Indicators

1. The course design should align with the philosophy and spirit of general education at NTU.
2. The course content planning should meet the corresponding general education area's course objectives and content descriptions.
3. The course title should match the course content.
4. The course should have a clear main theme and coherence between each lecture.
5. The course content should have an appropriate level of knowledge depth.
6. The academic expertise of the teacher or their extended fields should generally be related to the course content. If the course offered is related to the professional field of the teacher's department, it should be substantively reviewed by that department; otherwise, it should be formally reviewed by the department in terms of personnel, course format, etc.
7. Assigned and extended readings should be detailed and correspond to the weekly progress. The methods and standards for grading, as well as requirements for students' after-class learning, should be reasonably planned and fully explained.
