●Introduction
In the age of AI, academic writing has become increasingly complex despite the rapid development of automatic text-generation tools. Academic writers are often confronted with the uncertainty of over-reliance on AI tools, as well as the challenge of condensing or rephrasing source materials into passages that remain faithful to the original texts without compromising academic integrity. This lecture will provide students with practical strategies for summarizing and paraphrasing to develop the higher-order cognitive skills indispensable to academic writing. Through examining examples from various sources and understanding the recommendations of major citation guides and journal publishers, students will acquire the essential skills needed to enhance productive writing, make informed decisions that uphold academic integrity, recognize plagiarism and common forms of academic misconduct, and learn how to avoid plagiarism by following the principles of major citation styles, thereby strengthening both the quality and integrity of their academic writing.
This lecture covers 1 hour of academic ethics courses in Category 2 and 1 hour in Category 3. Master's and doctoral students (after 2018 admissions) must obtain at least 6 hours across at least three categories to fulfill the requirement. Participants must make up any shortfall in course hours on their own.
