2023.10.19 NTU Royal Palm Lecture Series Philip L.-F. Liu, Academician of Academia Sinica

National Taiwan University has established the Royal Palm Lecture Series as a campus-wide special lecture series aimed at expanding the perspectives of students and faculty members. This series invites distinguished scholars or professionals from both domestic and international backgrounds in academia or industry, who have demonstrated exceptional achievements or global impact, to deliver speeches and participate in academic exchanges at the university. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Philip L.-F. Liu, Academician of Academia Sinica. All members of the university are enthusiastically encouraged to participate.

l   Introduction of Speaker:

Dr. Philip L.-F. Liu is a renowned expert on tsunami research. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from NTU, Dr. Liu went to MIT for graduate school. Since receiving a Ph.D. degree in 1974, Dr. Liu has been a faculty member in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University until retiring in 2016. Dr. Liu had been appointed as the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at Cornell University, and the Vice President and Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore. Presently, Dr. Liu is the Kwoh-Ting Lee Chair Professor at National Central University and the Yushan Fellow of the Ministry of Education. Dr. Liu dedicates his research to nearshore waves and hydrodynamics. His achievements in tsunami modeling and theory are particularly outstanding. He has organized many post-event field surveys of sites damaged by tsunamis. Because of his high influence and outstanding contributions in the field of ocean and coastal engineering, in 2015 Dr. Liu was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA, and in 2016 Dr. Liu was elected an academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Dr. Liu is passionate about both teaching and research. He has trained nearly 30 Ph.D. graduates and cultivated close links with his students. His former students are now scattered throughout the world and remain in close contact with Dr. Liu.
